PROJECT BACKGROUND

Unlike the majority of Dimond Boulevard, this roadway segment resembles a rural roadway with narrow pavement, ditches and an alignment that follows rolling terrain. MOA’s 1996 Official Streets and Highways Plan classifies the roadway as a Class I Residential Collector. Traffic count data compiled by Central Region Highway Data Section indicates an approximate Average Daily Traffic (ADT) of 1,400 in 2003.

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to upgrade approximately 5,300 feet of Dimond Boulevard between Jodhpur Street and Sand Lake Road to Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) urban collector standards. Improvements will include roadway foundation and surfacing, curb and gutter, storm drainage, street lighting, pedestrian facilities and landscaping.

Existing Conditions

The existing roadway is generally contained within a 100-foot right-of-way and consists of two 12-foot wide lanes with gravel shoulders varying in width from 0-feet to 2-feet. Built on rolling terrain, several crest vertical curves appear deficient in terms of sight distance. No pedestrian facilities exist within the corridor.

Drainage along the corridor is provided by roadside swales along the majority of the alignment. No storm drain or public water and sanitary sewer systems exist along the project corridor. Overhead telephone and electric lines exist throughout the project and support mounted streetlights at intermittent locations on the south side of Dimond Boulevard.
